After far too long a hiatus, I'm pleased to announce that I will be participating in the 39th annual "Made in California" group exhibition at the Brea Gallery. This show in particular, for me, has a bit of that "full cirlce" vibe - I was actually accepted into this same show several years ago, but was unable to participate due to circumstances which, in retrospect, were easily avoidable - truly a missed opportunity on my part.

So, let's get to brass tacks - below is everything you need to attend.
Opening date and time: April 27th, 2024, 5pm to 7pm
Location: Brea Gallery: 1 Civic Center Circle, Brea, CA 92821

If you can make the opening, just know that the exhibiton runs from April 27th to June 23rd. And as far as spaces to view art go, the Brea Gallery is truly one of those locations designed to maximize the experience of the viewer - not only is it located in a much larger complex dedicated to the arts in general, the space itself has a flow and sense of movement to it that is ideal for the viewing of art. Clearly, the Brea Gallery is a space made for and by artists.

If you would like to learn more about the exhibition, I highly recommend that you check out the press release, which you can access by clicking here. Please also be certain to check out the rest of the amazing work for this exhibition by clicking here.

And if you must know, here is the piece that was accepted into the show.

"Aphantasia / Production", oil on canvas, 24" x 20"

"LAST WE HEARD" - VIRTUAL OPENING SEPTEMBER 3RD AT ART ATTACK SF

This recent body of work is many things to me: an ode to my obsession with detail, a love letter to the human figure, a joyful - and frankly, surprising - synthesis of explosive color and loose mark making. More than this however, these pieces represent a shift in my practice towards risk, that quality that elevates the materials to something beyond canvas, oil and pigment. As one whose artistic tastes have always veered towards the visually literal, the importance of this change cannot be understated; far too often I have found myself wedded to the reference material to the point of stagnation, resulting in work that, while technically proficient, was increasingly less enjoyable to create.

Perhaps most crucially then, this show is a snapshot of an artist in willing flux, embracing play, learning how to work without fear and reservation. And while I do not think I will ever get away from the representational (and not that I want to!), in these paintings, which for so long have stared back at me from the walls of my studio, I believe I have lighted upon something vital and rejuvenating; it is a new direction that serves as both a reminder of what has come before, and what is possible in the future, and I am eager to continue.

Join me on Thursday, September 3rd for the virtual opening. There will be two live sessions that can be watched via the Art Attack SF Instagram account (@artattacksf):

First live session at 1pm PDT
Second live session at 6pm PDT
